Animal Vaccinations: What Every Pet Owner Should Know About Preventive Care

Taking care of a pet is not just about giving them a nice place to live, exercise, and good food. Preventive veterinary care is also critical to helping keep animals healthy and safe from serious infectious diseases. One of the best methods of helping a pet’s long-term health is to get them vaccinated.

But many pet owners are not certain about which vaccinations their pets require, or when the booster shots might be needed. When making these decisions, it’s easier if you know the basics. Pet owners, with the help of a veterinarian, can develop a vaccination plan that is appropriate for their animal’s age, lifestyle, and health.

Why Animal Vaccination Matters

Animal vaccinations help prepare a pet’s immune system to recognize and respond to specific infectious diseases. This can minimize the chances of serious disease or limit the severity of the disease in some cases, or prevent infection altogether.

Vaccination of animals is a crucial component of their preventive health care program, and is important for both cats and dogs. Some vaccines are offered to help prevent life-threatening diseases, and others are for infections that are more likely under certain living conditions.

Vaccination also supports wider animal health by reducing the spread of preventable diseases within pet communities. Rabies vaccination is especially important in areas where the disease occurs because rabies can affect both animals and people.

Know Which Vaccine Your Pet May Need

Not all pets need the same set of vaccines. Most veterinarians recommend a core and non-core vaccination distinction, depending on the disease covered by the vaccine and the animal’s personal risk.

Core vaccines are recommended for almost all dogs or cats and are directed against the most serious diseases. Dogs are typically protected from distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus. Cats are usually vaccinated against feline panleukopenia (CPV), herpesvirus (FHV), and calicivirus (FCV).

Other vaccines may be recommended based on local disease risks and lifestyle. Discuss with your veterinarian what vaccinations are necessary based on the animal’s medical history.

Follow the Right Vaccination Schedule

Typically, puppies and kittens need multiple vaccinations in their first few months. Early doses may not be as effective because they have a developing immune system and antibodies that were received from their mothers. That’s why a single shot does not offer total protection.

The timing of later doses depends on the vaccine, the pet’s age, previous vaccinations, and applicable guidelines. Booster doses may be required at different times for adult pets. There are vaccines that need to be given more often than others.

Maintain a vaccination record to be shared in writing or electronically for all vaccinations. Add vaccine name, date of vaccination, and next vaccine appointment.

Prepare Your Pet for a Vaccination Appointment

With a little preparation, a veterinary visit can be easier. Take any previous vaccination records with you, and inform the veterinarian of any medical issues, medications, allergies, or vaccine reactions that your pet may have had.

Talk about any unusual symptoms or illness recently. Your veterinarian will be able to determine if the vaccine should be given or if additional testing is recommended.

If your pet shows facial swelling, breathing difficulty, collapse, or repeated vomiting following vaccination, please seek veterinary help immediately. These may indicate a serious allergic reaction.
